This post by BobbyRobin got me thinking about one of my favourite books when I was younger - The Magic Far Away Tree. It was just so magical.
I remember doing a book review on it when I was maybe 9 or so, standing up in front of the class & saying 'I am reading The Magic Far Away Tree, the main characters are called, Jo, Bessie, Fanny & Dick....' then being told to sit down by the teacher!! Oh dear, some names are just too rude :)
Also! What about The Water Babies?!!! I could never find anyone who remembered this & wondered whether it was all a figment of my imagination until I found, & bought, the book. It was a happy day.
You can read it here - yay!

the magic far away tree I'm not familiar with - but the water babies! that book was ripped apart after all the reading and gazing at the pictures!! love!
i haven't heard of any of these books. I was obsessed with alice in wonderland and 20,000 leagues under the sea. i made my dad read those 101 times a day. my mom never read to me bc at the time she couldn't read english.
Hi, thanks for adding me to your blog list! I LOVE both these books. I had stacks of Enid Blyton books but this one was my favourite out of everything. And I have a beautiful copy of Water Babies.
she also wrote the famous five series if i remember correctly? i love those books too!
I loved the Water Babies, although I always found it slightly melancholy. I should re-read it again now that I'm all grown up. I adored the illustrations though. My MIL suggested it as an Xmas present for my 3.5 year old and we said maybe in a couple years. I think she said she'd found a new edition in the bookshop so perhaps it's having a resurgence.
